10 tips to reduce indoor allergy symptoms

Springtime does not only bring deliciously longer days, warmer weather, fresh breezes and blooming flowers. For people with allergies, it means the return of pollen. Pollen and allergies don’t mix. There’s not much you can do to avoid them- after all, it’s produced by grasses, trees, flowers and weeds. But you can minimize the misery. Here’s your springtime pollen survival guide.

 

Can You Really Avoid Pollen?

Be realistic: complete avoidance of pollen is impractical. Early and late stages in summer and spring season bring different types of pollen from various sources. Some types of pollen may linger longer, depending on temperate and windspeed. But there’s a lot you can do to minimize the fallout from pollen! Even indoor.

 

 

First, Know Your Pollen Count

Pollen is the invisible annoyance. The average pollen particle is smaller than the width of an average human hair. But once pollen reaches your nose and throat, it can trigger an allergic reaction if you are the sensitive type. It’s easy enough to check the pollen count in your local area with online weather sites and apps (e.g. http://www.weather.com/allergy). Pollen counts calculate a given pollen in a specific amount of air during a particular period, such as 24 hours. It also tells which type of Pollen are active in this particular period, if you know which type of Pollen you’re most allergic to.

 

 

Make your indoor space a pollen-free zone.

Keep the pollen outside to alleviate symptoms throughout the day, and ensure you have a safe haven when the pollen counts are particularly bad. Here are ten simple things you can do to cut down on Pollen:

 

  1. Change and wash clothes after being outside; 
  2. Take a shower to remove pollen from skin and hair; 
  3. Use and air purifier to clean the air from 99,97% of all airborne Pollen; 
  4. Keep doors and windows closed; 
  5. Stay indoor between 10AM and 4PM, hich is when pollen counts tend to be highest during the day. 
  6. Clean the house: dust first, vacuum last. Work from top to bottom with a damp cloth. 
  7. Remake the bed and wash in hot water (at least 60°). Also wash and machine dry throw pillows and stuffed animals. 
  8. Use double doormats: both inside and outside. Be sure to shake out both mats twice a week. 
  9. Place your air purifier near windows, but keep a distance of min. 50cm. 
  10. Remove clutter and reduce dust generators such as fabrics, blinds and carpets.
